NAN II plays your music and movies, reads you books, looks things up in an offline Wikipedia and translates, all on board, with the AI models you choose. It works without the internet, and DAOMSYS^™, its operating system, never calls home to us. Next come its wheels, for the groceries and the campsite.

Wikipedia on board

An offline copy of Wikipedia lives inside NAN II. Look things up anywhere, with no signal at all.

A medical wiki

A medical encyclopedia on board, for looking things up when you're far from a signal. It's a reference, not your doctor.

Hundreds of books

Hundreds of classics from Project Gutenberg that NAN II can read to you, a chapter at a time.

Translator

Listens in one language and speaks in another, so everyone at the table can talk.

NAN II is the body. You choose the brain.

NAN II runs open AI models, the kind anyone can download, right on its own computer, and you decide which ones. DAOMSYS is the harness around them: it gives the model you pick ears, a voice, a face and a screen, and it decides what that model can reach. What the model says is up to the model and the people who made it, so choose one you trust.

Load the models you like, and change them whenever you want.
Use a quick model for easy chat and a deeper thinker for harder questions.
When a better open model comes out, put it on NAN II yourself. No waiting on us.

No phone home

DAOMSYS never phones home.

“No phone home” means NAN II’s operating system never calls us: no telemetry, no account to sign into, no switch we can flip from afar. It doesn’t need the internet to work, and it answers to you.

It doesn't call us

DAOMSYS sends us no recordings, no usage data and no check-ins. There's no telemetry to opt out of.

No internet needed

Wikipedia, the books, the music and the movies are all on board, so NAN II works the same at home or off the grid.

Its memory stays home

NAN II keeps facts only when you tell it to, plus a day log of what it did and what its camera saw. Both stay on the robot, and you can ask what's in them.

Nothing changes unless you say so

DAOMSYS takes no updates from afar and leans on no servers of ours. Nothing changes, and it keeps working, until you decide otherwise.

What you add is your call

Install a different model, an app or a service that goes online, and it runs by your rules. DAOMSYS won't stop you, and it won't tell us.

Yours to repair or modify

Open it up, swap a part, change its voice, its face or its software. It's your robot.

Jody Morris Gelbart wrote and illustrated a short story about a robot named NAN II, and registered it with the U.S. Copyright Office on January 29, 2014.

The world caught up

The story waited while computers got small enough to ride inside a robot, and AI got good enough to run with no cloud at all.

Designed by the person who dreamed it up

Jody brought NAN II to life, and kept going: Jody designed every one of its arcade games and wrote its theme music, so NAN II's games and theme song are its very own.
